What is whey protein?

Whey protein is a derivative of the cheese manufacturing process and contains a variety of nutrients and essential amino acids, typcailly found in either a ready-to-drink or protein powder form. With the highest biological value (BV) (LINK TO BV info below) of any protein, whey is commonly known as “The Perfect Protein."  Proteins are responsible for a long list and wide variety of essential functions in our bodies including the growth and maintenance of muscle, bones, cartilage, hair, skin, and nails. Proteins are also needed to make certain enzymes, hormones, blood and also help to enhance immune  function.*  Whey Protien is recognizable by alot of differnt age groups and used for various reasons, therefore you may also see words like "weight loss products, whey powder, sports supplements, whey protein nutrition, and body building supplements" all tied to whey protein.

One exciting benefit of dietary protein is that it increases the feeling of fullness (satiety) when compared to equal amounts of carbohydrates and fats. The result is that we can eat fewer calories from protein and feel just as satisfied as we would from eating greater amounts of carbohydrates. Protein is a natural appetite suppressant!

What are essential amino acids?

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, most of which cannot be synthesized (made) by the body but through diet. Amino acids are involved in every cellular function in the body. There are 20 common amino acids needed by the human body. Of these, 10 are considered “non-essential amino acids” because the body is able to produce these independently through our internal metabolic processes. “Essential amino acids” cannot be produced by the body and thus must be obtained through dietary sources. Whey protein contains all essential amino acids the human body requires.

What is “Biological Value” and why does that make whey the “Perfect Protein”?

Biological Value, or BV, refers to the human body’s ability to access and metabolize (utilize) a protein for optimal use. BV values of various proteins are reported on a scaled system using eggs, also a high BV product, as the bench mark. The BV’s of proteins produced from milk processing are as follows:

How much APC ACTIVE PROTEIN COMPLEX™ protein should I consume each day?

The answer to this question depends extensively on life style. For a typical, sedentary person weighing approximately 150 lbs, 56 grams of protein from a high-quality source should be sufficient. For a physically active growing teen athlete involved in intense daily work outs or a competitive body builder, amounts nearly twice this level are considered appropriate.

When should I consume APC ACTIVE PROTEIN COMPLEX™ whey protein?

The timing of the whey protein consumption can be very important. For example, using whey protein immediately preceding a work out increases muscle stamina, endurance, and reduces fatigue. Whey consumption following a work out speeds muscle recovery and thus enables the athlete to pursue intense physical activity with shorter rest periods between workouts. We recommend that for athletes and active adults involved in daily exercise that whey supplements be used in conjunction with workouts. Dieters and users interested in general healthy improvement should use whey as a supplement or replacement for other dietary protein sources (for example, use whey to replace high-fat and/or low BV sources of protein).
